RL sketching in Café Vienes,Casa Fuster,Barcelona
This picture was commissioned by a group of climbers who regularly climbed these mountains. They know every inch so the painting had to be topographically accurate as well as atmospheric.
I chose the Blea Tarn aspect in order to depict the reflected Pikes and the autumn mists. It became one of my longest projects and at times became my own “Devil’s Tower” obsession (from Stephen Spielberg's film Close Encounters of the Third Kind).
I completed numerous studies for the composition, but it required the large scale of the final painting to be effective. A great time was had in The Old Dungeon Ghyll pub at the foot of the Langdales, with my clients in the evening reminiscing about their hair-raising exploits.
